A Family Adventure to the Moon

I remember the first time I saw the moon in a telescope. It was a calm, dark night and I wanted to show my kids how to use a simple little telescope I purchased from Toys R’ Us (of all places). I had no idea if we would even be able to see anything through it because I really didn’t take the small apparatus very seriously. It was a toy after all. But after a little creative maneuvering, I finally located the satellite and was floored. I found it. I actually found the moon and I could see it with a clarity I never expected from a child’s plaything.

I mean, it’s one thing to see the moon in books and magazines, but it’s an entirely different thing to *experience* the moon in reality. The visual was simply astounding. I could see everything… the dark patches, the scratched surfaces, the craters. It looked just like the photographs I viewed in the past – only clearer, calmer, and perhaps even bigger for some reason. It was simply awesome. My children shared the same experience and for once, we felt validated in what we were taught in science.

Yet as wonderful as that experience was, I couldn’t help but wonder what else I would see and feel had I viewed the moon with a higher quality telescope. The thought was terrifyingly exciting. I wondered just how much more of the moon I would see. Would I be able to see a little bit inside the craters? Would I see surrounding stars? Would I find Richard C. Hoagland’s lost alien civilization? (Hey, we can all dream, can’t we?)

I can’t recommend introducing the telescope into your family enough. For a brief moment in time, the telescope lets an entire family share a phenomenon that’s bigger than life. Whether you’re viewing the moon, Mars, Venus, or Saturn, there’s nothing like seeing these celestial objects in person.

6 Simple Steps to Find A Coupon

This guest post was provided by Liz Cutten. She specializes in finding the best promo codes online on her site MyCCFinder.com.

I love saving money online, and honestly, I can’t remember the last time that I set out and purchased something for full price. The Internet is a great place to find everything from sales items, to coupons, and I wanted to share with you the six steps that I use to find great coupons online.

#1 Start with Social Media: You will be surprised at how many companies have coupons, as well as offers right on their Facebook, as well as Twitter page. What you will want to do is go to these pages, and see what kind of deal that you can get. 99% of the time, you will have to “like” the page to get the deal.

#2 Search online: A great way to find fresh coupon codes, as well as printable codes is to simply search for them. Instead of doing a search on Google, you will want to search via the “most recent” results. When you search in the most recent results, you will find coupons that were just posted.

#3 Buy your coupons: Buy the coupons, you’re asking? Yes, I know it sounds silly, but you will find that you can get some great coupons on places like eBay. The cool thing about this is that you can get coupons for pennies that will save you a lot more than that.

#4 Sign up for newsletters: Just like Facebook, you can join the newsletters for most brands, and restaurants. You will find that a lot of them will give you a coupon, as well as freebie just for signing up. Not only that, you’re going to get coupons for the future as well.

#5 Participate in forums: Savings forums such as SlickDeals, and Fatwallet are a great place to scour on a daily basis. Not only can you find some great offers, and deals, you can also find some great coupons. You can also search for coupons here as well that you may not find elsewhere.

#6 Get the Sunday paper: I highly recommend that everyone subscribes to the Sunday paper. You’re going to find that the publications there have great coupons for not only your groceries, but restaurants and more. You don’t need to subscribe, but you can pick up in your local grocery store, and more.

These six steps should easily allow you to find some great coupons. Follow some of the tips above, and you should be able to save a decent amount of money on your next purchase.

Cool Winter Wedding Favors to Warm Their Hearts

For me, it’s all about the snow. Yes, I know there are many parts of the country that get little or no snow during the winter. I live in a place that rarely sees more than a day or two of snow (no blizzards, no sleigh-ready accumulation) in any given year, which probably explains why I love snow so much. It makes everything look beautiful (until people start driving on it.)

It also explains why the wonderful winter wedding favors I’m about to show you all center on snow. I had a winter wedding without snow, so wedding favors were a terrific way to incorporate the most symbolic icon of the season into the festivities. Here are my five favorites:

Snowflake Bottle Stopper—I like this one because, as you can see from the photo, it’s a heartwarming winter favor that’s specifically made for a product that warms everything else in a person. So I’m thinking it’s pretty likely every guest will find a use for it at home. When you visit them next winter, you can feel confident they’ll have a little something to warm you up, too!

Snowflake Bookmark—A practical gift that reminds me of one of the great joys of wintertime—curling up in a comfy chair with the latest best seller next to a roaring fire, a cup of hot chocolate on the table beside you and snow falling silently out your window. The bookmark, accented with an elegant ice-blue tassel, also shows your guests you give them credit for expanding their horizons by reading.

Snowflake Favor Box—You simply can’t go wrong giving your guests more food, especially sweets. Fill these snowflake-shaped favor boxes with M&Ms, jelly beans, Jordan almonds, cinnamon hearts or whatever. Most of the favor boxes won’t make it to the car after your wedding. The goodies will be eaten sometime before the end of the event. That’s why dancing is so popular at weddings—so people can work off some of the sweets they’ve eaten.

Snowflake CoastersWell, you have to have someplace to put down your drink when you visit the home of one of your wedding guests later on in the winter, right? This is a good time to talk about mixing and matching your wedding favors. Bottle stoppers and coasters go together well, so you can alternate favors at the table settings. Both of these will sprinkle “snow” on the tabletops, adding an element of seasonal décor.

“Snow Flurry” Ornament Place Card/Photo HolderSnowflakes outside, snowflakes inside and a holiday decoration all around! This clear-glass cutie can be used as a place card holder, a photo holder and an ornament to hang on the tree at home. If your wedding is before Christmas or on Christmas eve itself, you might choose to have a decorated, beautifully lit tree as part of your reception décor. Fill the tree with enough of these winter favor ornaments to have one for each guest and invite them all to grab one to take home at the end of your event.

A brrrrrrrrrilliant idea, don’t you think!
